I want to chime in for all the aspiring pianists out there. I nearly gave up playing piano because of all the incredible piano players out there on RUclips. I used to compare my playing to theirs, and I really really suuuuuuuck. Like totally suck. Then I realized that all the world’s best piano players are on these videos. Why am I comparing my playing to theirs? I will never be as good as them. Ever. It’s like comparing my measly 12:30/mi running pace to Kipchoge and getting down because I can’t compete against a gold medal Olympian. For months I stopped playing piano because of it. Then someone told me, don’t play for anyone else. You play because you like it. You play for yourself. That made me smile. Now I play again. The notes are wrong, the rhythm is wrong, I hit the keys too hard, I don’t pay attention to the dynamics, but, who cares. I love it. I Just play.
